Listen to Me

"Listen to Me" is the inspirational story of Kim Brinkman Smith who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 16. She had a 75% chance of surviving and was told she’d likely never be able to have children. Her chemotherapy treatments were so brutal that she didn’t care if she died. However, Kim’s cancer was not the biggest battle of her life. Instead, it was her inability to accept that her daughter, Avery, was born with a hearing impairment. When the audiologist explained that Avery would never speak clearly unless she wore hearing aids, Kim surrendered her pride. By God’s grace, Kim conquered each obstacle in her path and rediscovered a life filled with faith, hope and love.

Synopsis

Listen to Me- Synopsis

"Listen to Me" is an inspirational, faith-based book that will often move the reader to tears. It is the story of Kim Brinkman Smith who survived Hodgkin’s disease as a sixteen-year-old who had been healthy and in excellent physical shape her entire life. When she was diagnosed with cancer, she was given a 75% chance of surviving. Her chemotherapy regimen was horrific and there were many days when she was so ill from the side effects that she wanted to die. While her friends were caught up in the excitement of cheering at ballgames and buying their prom dresses, Kim wondered if she’d live long enough to attend prom. When her classmates were planning their future careers, Kim was thinking about the wig she’d need to purchase when she lost her beautiful long hair.

Kim and her three sisters were raised in a Christian home by faithful, hard-working parents who introduced Christ to the girls at a young age. They provided a firm spiritual foundation that was strengthened by prayer. When Kim was blindsided by the cancer, her parents prayed for her to have the strength to survive and for her doctors to provide her with the best possible care. Throughout the book, the reader will feel the depth of Kim’s prayers and her family’s as they did everything they could not to be swallowed up by the fear of the unknown. This was often impossible for Kim to do, especially when she was so ill from the chemo treatments.

This book is a love story on so many levels. In a symbolic way, it is the story of God’s abundant love for each of us. In a literal way, it is a story of a mother’s unconditional love. This certainly applies to Kim’s mother who kept the family grounded throughout Kim’s ordeal; it also applies to Kim’s unconditional love for her two children. On a romantic level, the reader will be hoping that Kim doesn’t let Brad (her future husband) get away when she doubts his carefree lifestyle.

Kim’s world is shattered when the tests finally confirmed that Avery’s hearing impairment was at a serious level that would require her to wear hearing aids at all times. Avery will have to wear hearing aids the rest of her life and she has now begun asking her mother why this has happened to her. It’s very emotional reading when Avery tells Kim not to ever pull her hair back in a ponytail when it’s a school day because she knows kids will make fun of her hearing aids and mock how “funny” they sometimes tell her she sounds when she talks.

As a cancer survivor, Kim walks in the county’s annual Relay for Life event. Her family then joins her later in making many laps around the one-mile track to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Kim, Avery and her family are also active in a fund-raiser for the hearing impaired called ‘Walk4Hearing.’ The book ends by Kim writing a personal letter to Tanner and Avery where she expresses the love and pride that she and Brad feel for them. There is a tender part in the letter where Kim encourages them to keep Christ in their hearts and to always be ready ‘to listen to Him’ because He will never point them in the wrong direction.
